About converting video to MP3

The TConverter Video to MP3 tool extracts the sound from a video file and saves it as an audio file. It accepts MP4, MOV, WEBM, AVI, MKV and M4V videos up to 100 MB. The video picture is discarded and only the audio is kept, so the result is much smaller than the original video and plays in any music player, phone or car stereo.

There are many everyday reasons to do this. You can save the audio of a recorded lecture or podcast to listen to on the go, keep the music from your own videos, or turn a voice note recorded as a video into a simple audio file. Please only extract audio from videos that you own or have permission to use, and respect the copyright of others.

You can choose between three output formats. MP3 is the most widely supported audio format and is encoded at 192 kbps, a good balance of quality and size for speech and music. M4A uses AAC, also at 192 kbps, and works especially well on iPhones and in Apple apps. WAV is uncompressed, which is handy when you want to edit the sound in an audio editor, although the file will be larger. If a video contains several audio tracks, the first audio track is extracted.

A video must contain an audio track to be converted. Screen recordings without sound or muted clips have nothing to extract, so the job ends with an error message instead of producing an empty file.

Extraction runs on the TConverter server with FFmpeg, and jobs are processed in a queue. A progress bar shows the real progress, and the audio file downloads automatically when it is ready; a Download button is available as well. The download keeps the original file name with the new extension, so holiday.mp4 becomes holiday.mp3.

Your video is uploaded over an encrypted HTTPS connection. The uploaded video and the extracted audio are deleted automatically within minutes, and a periodic cleanup removes anything left behind. Files are never shared. The tool is free and needs no sign-up.

Frequently asked questions

Which video formats are supported?

MP4, MOV, WEBM, AVI, MKV and M4V files up to 100 MB.

What quality is the MP3?

MP3 and M4A files are encoded at 192 kbps. WAV output is uncompressed.

What happens if the video has several audio tracks?

Only the first audio track is extracted. The video picture is discarded.

Are my videos stored on the server?

Only during processing. Files are uploaded over HTTPS and deleted automatically within minutes. They are never shared, and no sign-up is needed.
